Michael Morton
Michael Morton (He/Him/His), MSc, RP, CCC
Michael Morton is a Registered Psychotherapist and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with a Master of Science in Psychotherapy from McMaster University. His education includes specialized training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at McMaster and preliminary training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at the Toronto Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He also holds a BSc (Honours) in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of Toronto. Early in his career, Michael focused on mental health research, contributing to studies on depression and suicide. He participated in clinical research on a brief psychotherapy intervention for managing suicide risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, which reinforced his commitment to providing evidence-based psychotherapeutic care. With over two years of experience at McMaster University’s Student Wellness Centre, Michael has supported diverse populations dealing with issues such as Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Eating Disorders, Personality Disorders, relationship concerns, transitional stress, emotion dysregulation, trauma, and suicide. He specializes in working with 2SLGBTQIA+ populations, offering gender-affirming care and support related to sexual orientation and gender identity. His lived experience within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community enhances his understanding of the unique challenges faced by this population and underscores his passion for working with these individuals.
Michael’s therapeutic approach is client-centred, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive. He utilizes evidence-based practices, including CBT, Compassion-focused CBT, Mindfulness-based CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). His goal is to create a warm, safe, and inviting therapeutic space that fosters personal growth, reflection, vulnerability, and authenticity. Michael’s strengths-based and values-guided approach ensures that clients lead the way as they explore and address their unique challenges.
Outside of his professional life, Michael is an avid plant and cat dad, a reality TV enthusiast, and a bookworm. He enjoys spending time at the beach or around the campfire with friends, discovering new music, and expanding his extensive vinyl record collection.
