After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University and a two-year program in Early Childhood Education, Laurel completed her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Her Masters education focused on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and working with children, young adults, and their families. With a background in Early Childhood Education, Laurel leans into her knowledge on working with children and development to create an engaging space. She enjoys and is committed to working with this demographic and strives to bring her clinical, educational, and vocational experiences into each unique counselling relationship.

During her time at Child and Adolescent Services of Hamilton, she conducted in-depth clinical assessments and provided clinical evidence-based counselling and crisis intervention to children, adolescents, and their families. In addition, she facilitated groups on high conflict divorce, internet hygiene, and more.

Laurel embraces an integrative treatment philosophy grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Dydadic Development, Solution-Focused Brief family and individual therapy,  and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Laurel has a special interest in childhood anxiety, pediatric OCD, issues related to separation and divorce, as well as cyberbullying and internet safety.

Laurel is committed to fostering a collaborative, empowering, and nonjudgmental environment for the children, young adults, and families she works with.

When Laurel is not working, you can find her going on hikes with her dog, reading a great book or baking some treats for her loved ones.

Continued Professional Development

Laurel continues to engage in supervised guidance to nurture clinical skills and uphold ethical responsibility. Clinical supervision fosters self reflection and provides case consultation to ensure that she is providing skillful and effective services to those she counsels.

As someone who is passionate about lifelong learning, Laurel has completed training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Single Session Therapy, Art Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion Focused Family Therapy and more. She continues to engage in new training opportunities and attends workshops. Because of the impact of COVID-19, Laurel attended a Psychological First Aid COVID-focused course to help her clients navigate the ever-changing world during this time. Recently, Laurel completed her certification in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy through Wilfrid Laurier University.
